VOLUNTEER WITH BOGAN SHIRE BUSHCARE PROGRAM
Bogan Shire Council is inviting members of the community interested in preserving our natural fauna and flora to join the new Bushcare Program.
The Bushcare program is a community-driven initiative to bring together volunteers of all ages and walks of life to restore, preserve, and protect our precious natural surroundings.
Volunteers can help at the new Bushcare Nursery to cultivate native plant species and with our riverbank rehabilitation program where we will be identifying and revitalising degraded river banks by removing weeds, re-vegetating and stabilising banks to enhance our local eco-systems.
All ages and experience welcome. If you are keen to join us please contact the Bushcare Program on 6835 9026 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to register your interest.
RATES AND WATER
Water notices for the first quarter have been issued and were due for payment on 13 November. The second instalment notice for rates has been issued and is due for payment on 30 November. Please contact Council as soon as possible if you are having difficulties making your rates or water payments so that arrangements may be entered into.
If ratepayers do not contact Council you may be referred to a debt recovery agent and further fees and charges added to your account. All overdue accounts also incur an interest charge of eight percent, calculated daily which also adds to the debt.
Council may also install flow restrictors to water meters for ratepayers with overdue water accounts. This is a last resort option and a much easier option for property owners having trouble paying accounts would be to call and discuss your options with Council.
Payments can be made in person by cash, cheque and eftpos at Council between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday. Payments may also be made by BPAY, direct debit, credit card, and deductions from Centrelink.
WATCH OUT FOR WEEDS
Recent storm rain has spurred the growth of many weed species in our paddocks and backyards including the noxious Green Cestrum (Cestrumparqui, also known as Green Poison Berry or Chilean Cestrum).
Green Cestrum is a large shrub with shiny leaves, clusters of yellow flowers and shiny, black berries. It contains a poison called carboxyparquin which causes liver and brain damage to both humans and animals.
Cattle are especially vulnerable to this plant, however it has also been known to kill goats, sheep, horses, pigs, camels and kangaroos – especially in the current conditions where there is not much palatable grazing vegetation available.
For further information on Green cestrum go to https://weeds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weeds/Greencestrum
Bogan Shire Council is also advising landowners with Tiger Pear or African Box Thorn on their properties to treat them, following recent rain.
